Sustainability Focus in English and Communications Class

by Arnica Rowan

Anchoring CMNS/ENGL 235 with a thematic focus on sustainability was a natural fit—the class was comprised primarily of students from the Diploma in Environmental Studies program. Their enthusiasm for practices incorporating and discussions relating to sustainability created momentum in the class.

This theme inspired students to focus several assignments on sustainability-related topics. We mirrored our theoretical approach in classroom practices: we strove to go paperless, and we turned off the overhead lights whenever enough natural light shone through the windows.

As our classroom was in the Northwest corner of E building, this occurred approximately 90 per cent of the time.

From an instructional perspective, I was intellectually and philosophically inspired by our sustainability focus, as well as thrilled to see students so passionate and engaged.
