Skaha Residence Wins Energy Challenge

by Rob St.Onge

Our Skaha Residence has just finished in first place in the province wide “Do it in the Dark” Energy Reduction Challenge.

All the Post Secondary institutions in BC, (with student residence buildings) took part in a 3 week competition to see who could reduce their energy consumption the most. (March 7-25)

The victory was the result of a Team effort. The team included Residence Manager Kathy Zucchi, O.C. Energy Manager Rob St.Onge, a Team of Resident Advisors (Travis Manders, Konstantin Usal, Rudy Kasongo, Natasha Perepelkin) and most of the student residents.

Support from the OC Ancillary Services and Facilities Department in the form of prizes and T-shirts helped drive student participation to unparalleled levels. Activities included a relentless education campaign which even had RA’s going door to door with a portable power meter to educate individual tenants of exactly where all their electricity goes.

A social media blitz through Facebook and a custom competition “Dashboard” web-site helped keep the interest up and gave the residents an ongoing forum for discussion.

Now that the contest is over, consumption levels will continue to be monitored for the next month to help determine how much of the behavior change will carry forward into people’s new behavioral norms. This will help tailor educational programs throughout the college in upcoming years.

Energy Metering equipment was generously provided by FortisBC PowerSense.

Thanks for bringing this challenge to our attention Rob! I believe many students at OC Skaha Place residence will forever change their energy consumption habits as a result of this educational experience. Thank you very much. I think you are doing an awesome job as Energy Manager for Okanagan College!
